Gargle and Tell: Listerine Fresh Citrus

One vital dental routine to do on a daily basis aside from brushing and flossing: Rinsing with mouthwash. This helps to prevent plaque build-up as well as stops cavities from forming not to mention leaves you with minty fresh breath.

I use Listerine for this purpose and my favorite Listerine Flavor to date is:

This Fresh Citrus Antiseptic Mouthwash is the real deal- the manna of all mouth care buffs. It freshens my breath and tastes like orange soda. It's the only flavor of Listerine that really made me think twice of not swallowing it, really.

According to the American Dental Association, it is best to use mouthwash before or after brushing. Don’t dilute it or it will be ineffective (I used to dilute it, now I know better!). And don’t rinse your mouth with water after either. Swish it through your teeth for 30 seconds to a minute before spitting out. You may need to wait 30 minutes before drinking water or eating to increase the effectiveness of your mouthwash.

  • Pour the mouthwash into a clean glass or paper cup. If you pour it into the cup attached to the top, you'll run the risk of contamination, especially if you share the bottle with others.
  • Slide the mouthwash quickly over your tongue
  • Throw your head back and stop the mouthwash right before it hits your epiglottis (the cartilaginous flap in the back of your throat). You'll know the mouthwash is resting in the right spot if you feel as if you're going to gag or swallow.
  • Make the mouthwash bubble and gurgle for at least 30-45 seconds (best to read the instructions on the bottle). Pull your tongue back a little and blow air through your throat slowly. Be sure to keep your head way back, and remember to keep the mouthwash right in front of your epiglottis. That's where the germs are sitting, far back and out of sight. Try not to swallow any of the mouthwash.
  • Drop your head back down and spit the mouthwash out. Repeat.
Pour the mouthwash into a clean glass or paper cup. If you pour it into the cup attached to the top, you'll run the risk of contamination, especially if you share the bottle with others.

The power of LISTERINE Antiseptic comes from a formula of four essential oils that kill millions of germs on contact. The fixed combination of eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate, and thymol continues to deliver unsurpassed results. No other branded mouthwash has this formula. And that's why no other mouthwash feels or works like LISTERINE.

Biofilm is a more recent term for the bacterial film on your teeth we call plaque. Biofilm is an organized community of germs in a gooey matrix that enables them to multiply and survive inside your mouth. Brushing and flossing help disrupt and remove this biofilm, but sometimes may miss hard to reach areas—prime real estate for gingivitis causing germs. LISTERINE Antiseptic rapidly penetrates the biofilm to kill plaque and gingivitis germs.

Because of the orange soda-like taste, I always look forward to my "Listerine time." It is a great product  even if you can't drink it :)
