Isang Kandila, Milyong Tanglaw (Million Candles Campaign)

"The Maguindanao massacre, also known as the Ampatuan massacre after the town where the mass graves were found, occurred on the morning of November 23, 2009, in the town of Ampatuan in Maguindanao province, on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. While the 58 victims were on their way to file a certificate of candidacy for Esmael Mangudadatu, vice mayor of Buluan town, they were kidnapped and brutally killed. Mangudadatu was challenging Datu Unsay mayor Andal Ampatuan, Jr., son of the incumbent Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan, Sr. and member of one of Mindanao's leading Muslim political clans, in the forthcoming Maguindanao gubernatorial election, part of the national elections in 2010. The people killed included Mangudadatu's wife, his two sisters, journalists, lawyers, aides, and motorists who were witnesses or were mistakenly identified as part of the convoy.

I remember how shocked I was (and the whole world, I guess) when I saw the news ---that was five years ago. I personally know one from the 34 journalists. We were acquainted but not really that close, but there's this brief instance that we worked together. He was a man of few words. He was a good man. I don't know why I still vividly recall his face. I'm dedicating this post to him, to Bro. Daniel.

10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

I'm lighting a candle at 6pm tonight, I'm inviting you to do the same.

Act against impunity (exemption from punishment).

Justice for the Ampatuan Massacre victims.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." Martin Luther King, Jr.
